Executives and Professionals React
Warwick, R.I. – November 10, 2008 – The only thing scarier than Halloween costumes this October was the unemployment rate’s jump to a new high this year, according to a report released by the U.S. Department of Labor. Roughly 240,000 Americans lost their jobs last month sending the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate from 6.1 percent to 6.5 percent. The total number of jobs lost this year amounts to 1.2 million. The report cited continued losses in manufacturing, construction and service-oriented professions, such as financial services and retail. However, healthcare and mining continued to expand. “We have seen an influx of professionals who were recently cut loose as companies forecast their profit margins beyond Q4 and into the first few quarters of 2009, which isn’t looking good,” said Waffles P. Natusch, president of The Barrett Group. “But the good news is that many professionals, especially our clients, are taking the time to reassess their career paths and some are even taking steps, with our guidance, to seek advanced education in their field or a new field altogether. People are making the most of their unfortunate circumstances.”
